Home Buying Tips
for Blended Families
Merging two families is never easy. Here’s some advice for
blended or about to be blended families who are choosing a home.
Most of it is from Perdita Kirkness Norwood, author of “The
Enlightened Stepmother.”
Start fresh. Instead of moving into a house that one of the
spouses already owns, there’ll be fewer ghosts if the new family
moves into a different home altogether.
Buy Big. Giving everybody the maximum space and privacy possible
is important.
Stick to the budget. Money is always an issue in a combined
family. Know what the family can spend and stay within those
limits.
Prefer traditional architecture. Often contemporary designs with
big, open floor plans don’t work as well for newly combined
families as traditional homes with more enclosed spaces.
Location, location, location. Saddling anybody with a dreadful
commute to work or school is a recipe for resentment. Avoid it
if you can.
